Expat Darien Machete – 12.38″ 1075 Black Oxide Plain Edge Drop Point Blade, Black Micarta Handle – ESEE-DARIEN

The Expat Darien Machete is named for the Darien Gap, the dense stretch of jungle and mountains on the border between Panama and Colombia where the Pan-American Highway is interrupted. It is built for that kind of country: a 12.38″ 1075 carbon steel blade with a black oxide finish, a black Micarta handle, and a khaki canvas sheath, at 15.5 oz.

1075 carbon steel is a tough, forgiving steel well suited to long blades that take hard impacts. It flexes and absorbs shock rather than chipping, and it is easy to resharpen in the field with a file or stone. ESEE hardens it to 54-56 HRC. The thin 0.094″ flat-ground blade moves quickly through brush, vines, and dense vegetation, and the black Micarta handle stays comfortable through long clearing sessions.

• Blade: 12.38″ 1075 carbon steel drop point, black oxide finish, flat grind, plain edge, 0.094″ thick, 54-56 HRC. 18.18″ overall.
• Handle: Black Micarta, comfortable for extended use. 5.80″ handle length.
• Sheath: Khaki canvas sheath included.
• Carry: 15.5 oz, light for a full-length machete.

Ideal for: jungle and backcountry travelers clearing trail through dense vegetation; landowners and hunters cutting brush and vines; and ESEE fans who want a lighter, faster-handling machete for long days of work.

Care: 1075 is carbon steel, not stainless. The black oxide finish helps protect the blade but can wear at contact points, and the edge is bare steel. Keep the machete dry and lightly oiled, and avoid storing it wet in the canvas sheath.

Will the 1075 carbon steel blade rust?

It can. 1075 is carbon steel, not stainless. The black oxide finish helps protect the blade but can wear at contact points, and the edge is bare steel, so wipe the blade dry after use, keep a light coat of oil on it, and do not store it wet in the canvas sheath.
