Fallkniven Thor – 10″ Laminated VG7 Convex Clip Point Blade, Brown Leather Handle, Black Leather Sheath – NL1L

The Fallkniven NL1L Thor is the first model in Fallkniven’s Northern Lights Series, a large, heavy-duty chopper named for the Norse god of thunder. It pairs a 10″ laminated VG7 blade with a convex edge, a stainless steel guard, and an oxhide leather handle, and ships with a black leather sheath.

Laminated VG7 combines a VG7 stainless steel core, which forms the edge, with tough 420J2 stainless steel on the sides. The hard core holds the edge while the softer outer layers add resilience, and Fallkniven says the laminate gives about 20 percent more resistance to bending than a solid VG7 blade. The 0.28″ (7 mm) blade is hardened to 59 HRC, and Fallkniven grinds its convex edge by hand for a strong balance of cutting performance and edge strength.

• Blade: 10″ laminated VG7 clip point blade, convex edge, 59 HRC, 0.28″ (7 mm) thick; stainless steel finger guard.
• Handle: Oxhide leather over a protruding broad tang, for a sure, rugged grip that ages to a brown patina; 15.15″ overall.
• Sheath: Black leather sheath.
• Carry: A full-size chopper at 17.7 oz (knife only), built for camp, trail, and heavy outdoor work.

Ideal for: outdoorsmen and bushcrafters who want a large chopper for clearing brush and processing wood; collectors of premium Scandinavian knives; and users who prefer a hand-finished convex edge.

Natural material note: each oxhide leather handle is unique, and its color and texture vary from knife to knife. Leather ages and darkens with use.

Fallkniven NL1L Thor: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about the Fallkniven Thor (NL1L).

What type of blade and sheath does the Fallkniven Thor NL1L have?

The Thor is a fixed-blade chopper with a 10-inch laminated VG7 clip point blade, 0.28 inches (7 mm) thick, with a convex edge and a stainless steel finger guard. A protruding broad tang runs through the oxhide leather handle. The NL1L version ships with a black leather sheath.

What is laminated VG7 steel?

Laminated VG7 has a core of VG7 stainless steel, which forms the cutting edge, sandwiched between outer layers of tough 420J2 stainless steel. The hard core holds the edge while the softer sides add resilience and resistance to torque. Fallkniven says the laminate gives about 20 percent more resistance to bending than a solid VG7 blade of the same thickness. On the Thor, it is hardened to 59 HRC.

What is a convex edge, and how do I sharpen it?

A convex edge curves outward toward the cutting edge instead of meeting at flat bevels, which leaves more steel behind the edge for strength during chopping. Fallkniven grinds this edge by hand. To maintain it, strop on leather or use a fine stone with a slight rocking motion that follows the curve, or use a fine abrasive on a soft backing.

How do I care for the oxhide leather handle?

The oxhide handle gives a sure, rugged grip and develops a brown patina over time. Keep it away from prolonged soaking, and let it dry naturally if it gets wet. Fallkniven notes that very dry conditions can cause small surface cracks that close again with use. Each leather handle varies slightly in color and texture.

What comes with the Fallkniven Thor NL1L?

The NL1L ships with the knife and a black leather sheath. Packaging and included items are set by Fallkniven and are subject to change.
